Subject: Miguel's Day
To: AP <arborpointe@googlegroups.com>, "Strong, Marisa" <mxs4ever@gmail.com>
Pictures include last known photos of Miguel with a fully intact forehead. ;-(
Spent about 2.5 hours at ER as they predicted. Sorry Angie had to
hang up on you abruptly when we finally got the call. Sweetie thanks
for the advice.
3 stiches inside and 6 stiches outside. Miguel total trooper
throughout. I held him down while getting stictches. Cried [Miguel
cried] with each stitch and for the first few said "Daddy stop!".
Then went with "It hurts!" then "I wanna see you daddy!" (had towel
over his eyes) and finally with "Doctor Stop!". I guess cause I kept
saying "doctor almost done". Other than that, he hasn't complained at
all about it, but won't let me ice it. Played in the snow like
nothing happened. Still up and refusing to go to bed 11p at the
cabin.
So at McDonald's and just routine pickup of Miguel from booth and set
down on floor. Done it a thousand times and in retrospect I used to
always make double sure he was stable before release, but probably not
in the last several months because he is so stable. Set him down and
he sort of stumbles forward a step then is falling to the ground.
Goes to catch himself, still pretty routine since only falling from
his own feet to ground, but McDonald's has these huge stools with a
foot rest circle probably 2 feet off the ground. Miguels arms are
like 22". So he hits perfectly squarely on the metal, no glancing
blow and no bracing with arms, full force. Immediately know it is not
good. Pick him up, his hands on his head, pull them back, see his
skull (cut to bone) and lots of blood. Put pressure right away, tell
Marisa to call 911 and find out nearest hospital. Walk towards door
and sit and wait there. Nurse in line comes over to assit. Calls 911
for us, gives me a bunch of napkins to stop bleeding instead of just
my bare hand. Seems like 2-3 minutes later paramedics and ambulance
arrive. Paramedics look at him and say bad gash, already stopped
bleeding, but if he didn't lose conscious and not vomiting, probably
OK, but take him to nearest ER. Miguel just saying wants to go home
so we just put him in car and go to ER.
After the few hours there, rest of the day pretty normal for Miguel.
Got ice cream (from McDonald's!) played in snow for a couple hours,
watched a movie, played with other kids and played with his toys. You
can see in the picture he lined them all up in his room. Marisa and
Mia missed half-day skiing we had planned for them.
He's finally gone to sleep now.
Guess we'll know in six months how much of an issue the scar will be...
